The Beast from the Sea

From the sea I saw a beast emerge, bearing ten horns and seven heads. And on his horns were ten crowns, and blasphemous names marked his heads.

He resembled a leopard, with feet like a bear and a mouth like a lion. The dragon granted him his power, his throne, and sweeping authority.

One of his heads appeared fatally wounded, yet the wound had been healed. The world was astonished and followed him.

People worshipped the dragon for empowering the beast, and they worshipped the beast, saying, “Who can compare to him? Who can defeat him?”

He was allowed to speak arrogant and blasphemous words and to exercise authority for forty-two months.

He uttered blasphemies against God—His name, His dwelling, and those who belong to heaven.

He was permitted to make war against God’s people and overcome them, and he was granted authority over every people group and nation.

All inhabitants of the earth will render worship to him—every person whose name has not been written in the book of life belonging to the Lamb slaughtered from the foundation of the world.

Let all who are willing to hear pay attention:

Those destined for captivity

will go into captivity;

those destined for death by the sword

will face it.

This calls for perseverance and steadfast faith from God’s people.

The Beast Rising from the Earth

Then I saw another beast rising from the earth. He had two horns like a lamb but spoke with the voice of a dragon.

He operated with the full authority of the first beast and compelled the world to worship that first beast—the one whose fatal wound had been healed.

He performed astonishing signs, even calling fire down from heaven before people’s eyes.

Through these signs he deceived humanity, urging them to construct an image honouring the beast who was wounded by the sword and yet lived.

He was permitted to animate the image so that it could speak and demand death for those who refused to worship it.

He enforced a mark upon everyone—regardless of status or wealth—on the right hand or forehead,

making participation in commerce impossible without this mark, which represented the beast’s name or number.

This requires discernment. Whoever has insight should calculate the beast’s number, for it represents the number of a man: 666.
