The Attainment of Believers to the Sabbath Rest of God

Therefore, let us fear, lest—while the promise to enter His rest continues to stand—anyone among you should appear to have missed reaching it.

For we too have received the gospel just as they did; yet the message they heard brought them no advantage, because they were not united by faith with those who heard it.

For we who have exercised faith enter that rest, just as He has stated,

“Just as I swore in My anger,

‘They will absolutely not enter My rest,’ ”*

though His works reached completion from the world’s foundation.

For He has spoken somewhere regarding the seventh day in this manner: “And God rested on the seventh day from all His works.”*

And once more in this passage He states, “They will absolutely not enter My rest.”*

Since, therefore, it remains true that some will enter it, and those who previously received the gospel failed to enter through disobedience,

He once more establishes a specific day—”Today”—communicating through David after considerable time, just as previously stated,

“Today, should you perceive His voice,

do not make your hearts rigid.”*

For had Joshua provided them rest, God would not have subsequently spoken about another day.

Consequently, a Sabbath rest remains reserved for God’s people.

For whoever has entered His rest has also ceased from his works, just as God ceased from His own.

Let us therefore exert ourselves diligently to enter that rest, so that no one falls through following that same disobedience pattern.

For God’s word is alive and energetically active, more penetrating than any sword sharpened on both edges, piercing to the separation point of soul and spirit, of joints and marrow, and capable of evaluating the heart's thoughts and intentions.

And no creature remains concealed from His sight, but everything lies exposed and laid bare before the eyes of Him to whom we must render our account.

Jesus, the Great High Priest and the Son of God

Since, therefore, we possess a great High Priest who has traversed the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us maintain our confession firmly.

For we do not possess a High Priest incapable of sympathizing with our weaknesses, but One tested in all respects as we are, yet apart from sin.

Let us therefore approach God’s throne of grace with boldness, so that we may receive mercy and discover grace for timely help.
