The New Heaven and the New Earth

I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the former creation had passed away, and the sea was no more.

I saw the holy city, the new Jerusalem, descending from God out of heaven, prepared like a bride beautifully dressed for her husband.

Then I heard a powerful voice coming from the throne announcing, “Look—the dwelling place of God is with men. He will live with them, and they will belong to Him. God Himself will be present with them as their God.

He will remove every tear from their eyes, and death will no longer exist. There will be no mourning, no crying, and no pain anymore, because the former world and its suffering have come to an end.”

The One seated on the throne said, “I am making all things new.” Then He said, “Write this down, for these words are faithful and true.”

He said to me, “It is finished. I am the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end—the origin and the goal of all things. To anyone who thirsts, I will freely give water from the spring of life.

Those who overcome will inherit these blessings. I will be their God, and they will be My children.

But the fearful, unbelieving, morally corrupt, murderers, sexually immoral, sorcerers, idolaters, and all liars will be sentenced to the lake of fire, which is the second death.”

The New Jerusalem

One of the angels who carried the final plagues said to me, “Come, I will show you the bride, the Lamb’s wife.”

Carried by the Spirit to a great and high mountain, he showed me the holy city, Jerusalem, descending from God in heaven.

It reflects God’s glory, shining like a precious jewel, like a jasper, clear and radiant.

The city has a great and high wall with twelve gates, guarded by angels, and inscribed with the names of Israel’s twelve tribes.

There are three gates on each side of the city—east, north, south, and west.

The city wall has twelve foundations bearing the names of the twelve apostles of the Lamb.

The angel measured the city and its gates and walls with a golden measuring rod.

The city is designed with perfect symmetry, forming a square, with its length and width identical. When the angel measured it with the measuring rod, it extended 12, 000 stadia in every direction—its length, width, and height all being the same.

He also measured its wall, which was 144 cubits thick, using the standard human measurement that the angel likewise employed.

The wall is built of jasper, and the city itself is made of pure gold, clear like glass.

The foundations of the city’s wall are adorned with every variety of precious stone. The first foundation is jasper, the second sapphire, the third chalcedony, the fourth emerald,

the fifth sardonyx, the sixth sardius, the seventh chrysolite, the eighth beryl, the ninth topaz, the tenth chrysoprase, the eleventh jacinth, the twelfth amethyst.

The twelve gates are twelve pearls, each one of the gates was made from a single pearl. And the street of the city is pure gold, like transparent glass.

I saw no temple there, because the Lord God Almighty and the Lamb themselves are its temple.

The city needs no sun or moon, for God’s glory illuminates it, and the Lamb is its light.

The nations walk by that light, and earthly rulers bring their honour into it.

Its gates are never shut, because there is no night.

The glory and honour of the nations are brought into it.

Nothing impure will enter—only those whose names are written in the Lamb’s book of life.
